More than two years ago, when I did my first walk through Dublin I crossed the Liffey using almost every bridge between the port and temple bar. I was quite excited seeing a new bridge named after Samuel Beckett being build which should be finished in 2010. Some weeks ago the bridge opened and a couple of days later we drove above it. Since then the bridge got a couple of shootings although we haven’t seen it in action… until today. It is a swing bridge so it can be closed and turns open parallel to the Liffey to allow ships to pass through. Apparently the setup is not finished yet, a couple of days ago the control center just had been filled with monitors and stuff. Tonight there was the first test run and we! saw! it! live! how cool is that :)

I just found the pictures from Washington DC, where I had been for a training in January.

I was disappointed about the city, sightseeing I had done last year – just have a look here [pics] and here [german]. There wasn’t really anything left for this year. I haven’t had time during the day so I couldn’t to go the museums at the national mall. I wasn’t tempted to see anything else. Besides from that I followed the recommendations of a native DC for tasty dinners. After all it was my birthday which I wanted to celebrate appropriately. So most of the pics will be about food … enjoy.

Last walk before leavingLast walk before leavingWashington DC, AirportI got sick, so I spend my last day most likely waiting for the plane home. DC airport.
Breakfast in HeathrowBreakfast at the Giraffe in Terminal 1, London Heathrow.

The outcome of this trip was a lost voice, which didn’t come back until a week later, a slight depression about the mentality in US, a week of tasty food and an having learned something at training. To be honest, I am not really pushed to go to DC again. If so, then just for taking Jimmy to some good food places, doing the national mall walk and seeing both Air & Space museums. I think it is fine for 2 or 3 days, but I wouldn’t go there for a week.

When I was in DC Airport I had a bit time to walk around. I kinda liked the Customer Service Area with broken, rebooting or closed desks only as well as the outdated information board.

Service desk fail I prefer humans when it comes to service…

Info board fail Slightly outdated…

…  new! New blog, new theme, new set of plugins, even a new domain. Frau Klein is gone .org

I have gotten greedy about features and decided to get another package provided from my hoster. I have more privileges to change everything and I can play around as much as I want. For the next weeks the new blog is going to be beta status until I finally make the transition to disable the old one. Previews and comments are welcome.

A while ago I read on one of my favorite german blogs about the cute profiles plugin for wordpress. I installed and instantly loved it. Unfortunately there are a few networks which aren’t supported out of the box. I wanted to change this and started playing around – I didn’t bother to check if there is a documentation, as it is a fairly easy modification. Be warned, you won’t find a concept of ‘pluggable’ networks.

What I have done … to add a link to my tungle profile.

  • Download the plugin and extract the archive somewhere. I got it from wordpress.org/plugin
  • Open the file cute-profiles/cute-profiles.php. I simply duplicated all entries for ‘identi’ and renamed the new ones to ‘tungle’, so in function activate_cute_profiles() I modified $cute_profiles_opts2. I also added it in the array in $cute_profiles_networks2.
  • Now the stylesheet configuration need to be changed. You will find one stylesheet for each size and style. Again I recommend to duplicate an existing entry. For now I just set the image configuration to the default image in one of the css files:
    div.cute_profiles_sprite a.cute_profiles_tungle{background-position:0 0;}
    div.cute_profiles_sprite a.cute_profiles_tungle:hover{background-position:0 -16px;}
  • Copy the modified version of the plugin into the wordpress plugins folder. When you open the Admin Dashboard > Settings > Cute Profiles in your preferred browser you will find an additional field like this one:
  • Now enter a value. The new button will appear on your cute profiles list.

Same I repeated for JasperForge, xFire and IUseThis.

Getting the icons placed

That’s a bit more tricky. Apparently all icons are stored in a single file containing a matrix for the normal and hover view. Instead of adding icons to all 6 variants (3 sizes multiplied by 2 styles) I just changed the one size and style combination I am using. As I am newbie on any graphics tool, playing around with gimp took some minutes. I downloaded the favicons from the mentioned services and copied it into the a new image file. Then I copied the section and increased the brightness. Then I modified the matching stylesheet and uploaded the new files to my blog. After adding the new profile links they are now visible :)

(This is the modified file I am using right now.)
