The World Is Surprisingly Angry About the End of Google Reader October 25, 2011
The demise of Google Reader’s share features is affecting everyone from RSS-junkies to Iranian freedom fighters, and many of them are very displeased. Google Reader itself is very much alive and well, and in fact, the RSS reader will soon sport a slick-looking redesign. However, at some point this week, the ability to follow, friend and share links within Reader will cease to exist, as Google pushes people to use Google+ for those kinds of things. Along with it, the myriad communities that depended on Reader for years for everything from meeting new people to organizing protests will just have to figure something else out. It turns out Google wasn’t so bad at social networks, after all. Displeased is actually not a strong enough word to describe these sentiment. These people are pissed, and they’re fighting back. (There are already protests planned outside of Google offices and a petition–using Google Docs, of course–to save Reader’s social features.) The dissenters divide into two camps: Iranians and the S…

Artist Takes Shots At Beyonce, Anderson Cooper, & Kim K With #OccupyHollywood October 25, 2011
With the tagline, “I am the Asshole %,” artist Ryan Casey puts some of entertainment’s biggest stars on blast. Capitalizing on the ‘Occupy’ movement, Casey calls stars out for what he sees are their hypocrisy, materialism, and narcism. Featuring Beyonce, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Chaz Bono, Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Snooki, Lady Gaga, and others, the #OccupyHollywood comics takes some not-so-subtle shots at celebs. But are they on point? You be the judge!    What other stars should be on Ryan Casey’s #OccupyHollywood list?…

The Rules of Effortless Parenting October 25, 2011
Post written by Leo Babauta. I often get asked how I can do so much while having six kids. My short answer, and all you really need to know, is my wife Eva is awesome. I couldn’t do half what I do without her. She is the reason Zen Habits is able to exist. And so if you want parenting advice, you’d be smart to ask her. She doesn’t, however, have a blog. And so I’ll share some things that we both do that make our jobs as parents easier. These are Very Important Rules that must never be broken by any Serious Parent … until, of course, you want to break them. The first rule of Rules of Effortless Parenting is that you should always break rules. Rules of Effortless Parenting There is really only one rule: Love Them. But you already knew that one, so let’s get into details: 1. Teach kids to be self-sufficient. Our kids started by learning how to pick up after themselves (as 1 and 2 year olds), and later learned how to feed themselves breakfast, brush their teeth and shower and dress themselves, wash dishes and cle…

Amped Wireless gives your WiFi 1.5-mile range: never lose signal in the garden again October 24, 2011
Those of us stationed inside the Engadget compound are always wishing we had better WiFi signal at the outer reaches of the battlements. Thank heavens for Amped Wireless’ range of professional networking tools. With a 600mW amplifier and a high-gain bi-directional antenna, its SR600EX Pro Smart Repeater can expand the range of your internet transmissions by up to 1.5 miles. The device also has two extra network ports for other devices and is designed for large buildings, boats, RVs or, you know… massive gadget labs. On the other hand, the AP600EX Pro Access Point can sit on the end of a wired network and do the same job for building-to-building connections. Both devices come with a 30-foot power-over-ethernet cable and are available today for $180.Continue reading Amped Wireless gives your WiFi 1.5-mile range: never lose signal in the garden againAmped Wireless gives your WiFi 1.5-mile range: never lose signal in the garden again originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 24 Oct 2011 15:36:00 EDT. Steve Jobs was “willing to go thermonuclear war” against Android October 21, 2011
Steve Jobs hated Android.  Did you know that?  Oh, okay, but did you know how much he hated it?  According to the AP, who obtained an early copy of the upcoming Jobs biography, he believed that Android was tantamount to “grand theft”.  What’s more, he was ready to spend every penny of Apple’s fortune to right the wrong committed by Google and its partners. A passage from “expletive-laden” interview with Walter Isaacson tells us that Steve became enraged when HTC introduced a handset in early 2010 which was perceived to steal many of Apple’s products or services.  After later meeting with Google’s Eric Schmidt at a cafe, Jobs said he was not interested in settling the lawsuit, instead wanting Google to “stop using our ideas in Android.”  The meeting obviously went nowhere and now we see the start of all the lawsuits. “I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs said. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a sto…

Steve Jobs didn’t October 6, 2011
Steve Jobs did not create products. He created an organization that predictably and reliably created emotionally resonant products. Steve Jobs did not make movies. He made a company that predictably and reliably made blockbusters. Steve Jobs did not wrest market share from competitors. He created new markets that attracted and sustained competitors. Steve Jobs did not design anything. He gave others the freedom to think about what jobs products are hired to do. Steve Jobs did not re-engineer processes. He brought engineering processes to works of creativity and the creative process to engineering. Steve Jobs did not develop new management theories. He showed by example that innovation can be managed. Steve Jobs was not a visionary. He put the dots together and saw where they led. Steve Jobs was not a futurist. He just built the future one piece at a time. Steve Jobs did not distort reality. He spoke what he believed would become reality at a time when those beliefs seemed far fetched. Steve Jobs was not chari…
